Honest hotel reviews, written from the room
I'm Sabrina Kalea — a travel writer who has spent the last seven years quietly checking into boutique and luxury hotels and reporting back without the gloss.
How this started
In 2019 I was working in hospitality PR and reading review after review that had clearly never spent a night in the room being praised. The gap between the brochure and the bed bothered me enough to do something about it.
So I started booking hotels anonymously, paying my own way, and writing the kind of review I'd send a close friend — the good, the overrated and the small things that decide whether you'd go back. Seven years and 140+ hotels later, that's still exactly what this is.
Today Sabrina Kalea is a small independent team based in Lisbon. We're read by travellers who care as much about the water pressure and the breakfast as the headline view — and by hotels who, to their credit, mostly want the honest version too.
Every review is made the same way
Consistency is the whole point. A score only means something if it's earned identically everywhere.
Booked and paid independently
Every stay is reserved like any other guest and paid in full. We don't accept free nights, hosted trips or payment in exchange for coverage. When a hotel isn't up to standard, we say so.
Scored across five criteria
Location, the room, service, food & bar, and value — each rated out of 10, then combined into the headline score. The same rubric applies to a Maldivian villa and a Lisbon townhouse.
Written from real notes
Reviews are written from notes and photos taken during the stay — never rewritten from press material. If something changes on a return visit, we update the review and date it.
A few principles we don't bend
Independence first
No paid placements, no affiliate pressure on the score. Any commercial link is disclosed in plain sight.
Consistency
The same rubric, everywhere, every time — so a 9 always means a 9.
Reader before hotel
If a detail would change your booking decision, it goes in — even the unflattering ones.
Who's behind the reviews
Small on purpose. Fewer people, more accountability for what we publish.
